October 23, 2008

From Girlfriendology:

There are over 2 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. Multiply that by all the friends and family, and this disease (and other forms of cancer) puts a definite strain on friendships. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, we offer 10 Ways to be a Good Girlfriend to a Friend with Breast Cancer. Interviews with women with breast cancer gave great insight into how to be a friend through this difficult situation.

Thanks Rosie for sharing this information. After talking with some girlfriends going through breast cancer, I understand how vital it is that we be really good girlfriends to help them deal and heal.

    Thanks! Debba

I would like to gather the loving energy that surrounds the friends and supporters of those that have breast cancer……..and use it to discover what is causing all of this disease?

“Cure” is not enough. Even if we could cure 100% of all cases, we would still face THOUSANDS OF NEW CASES EVERY DAY!

We must work, as friends and colleagues, to discover the causes of breast cancer – to prive the “Pure cure” – save lives and spare women the disease!

Solvangirl, I am so sorry to hear about your best friend. I also suggest you– and perhaps she– check out The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan. Its a very encouraging memoir about a 30-something woman during her fight against breast cancer. Another great resource are the two Crazy Sexy Cancer books by Kris Carr. Wishing you and your friend all the best!

What does it mean to be beautiful in America? For years, pop culture has insisted that beautiful women are tall, thin, and blonde. So what do you do if your mirror reflects olive skin, raven hair, and a short build? Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image, and Growing Up Latina offers a provocative account of the struggles and triumphs of Latina forced to reconcile these conflicting realities. Rosie Molinary combines her own experience with the voices of hundreds of Latinas who grew up in the US navigating issues of gender, image, and sexuality. This empathetic ethnography exemplifies the ways in which our experiences are both profoundly individualistic and comfortingly universal.
